A Goodbye (of sorts) from Moving Writers

Allison and I started Moving Writers, the blog, nearly 12 years ago on the Monday we returned to school after attending NCTE. We named it as we walked through the courtyard to our classrooms.

“It’s not about making better writing,” Allison said. “It’s about growing better writers.”

We began with an aggressive posting schedule of 2-3 posts per week while we taught full-time in neighboring classrooms. And then we added Jay and Stefanie. We added legends like Tricia Ebarvia. And we grew and we grew.

And, today, we’re saying goodbye. Well, goodbye-ish.

We will not be posting any new content to Moving Writers, the blog.

There are scads of reasons for our decision. Listing them will likely sound like protesting too much, methinks.

So, I will simply say this: we are, have been, and will remain so grateful for you, our readers. I think I speak for everyone who has ever written for Moving Writers when I say that this unpaid job has kept us afloat. It has kept us in the game. It has made our work in our classrooms feel more meaningful at times that we really, really needed that.

For Allison and me, this little blog has changed our lives.

Thank you. Thank you for reading. Thank you for sharing with your colleagues. Thank you for being present for your students who so desperately need good teachers.

Read Our Books

One of the things that makes me most proud of the work we’ve accomplished here is the number of professional books it has launched. At last count, ten books have been published by the writers from this community since we began.

Just in the last few months, we’ve had a bunch:

  • I have a brand new book that came out this summer — filled with writing strategies and videos for your students. You can find Mini Moves for Every Writer here.
